Womens Motorcycle Helmets

It’s been proven that among the different modes of transportation, motorcycle ride is the more dangerous way to travel. When a motorcycle rider meets an accident, he may experience hospitalization, long-term disability, or even death. In 2008, statistics reveal that there were more deaths that resulted from motorcycle accidents over car accidents.

When buying a motorcycle helmet, you must give weight to protection and safety features on top of expression of personal style. The following factors must also be considered in choosing a helmet,

  • proper sizing and fit
  • approval/sticker from the concerned government agency
Helmet Construction

Helmets have two protective components: the outer shell and inner liner. The hard outer shell provides skull protection from puncture of pointed objects. Also, this is designed to spread the kinetic force from the impact across itself prior to conduction into the helmet. The shock-absorbing inner liner acts as the second layer of defense when the force of impact can no longer be contained by the outer shell.

Helmet Sizing and Fit

When choosing a motorcycle helmet, refer to the manufacturer’s fitting chart as a guide. Women’s motorcycle helmet sizes come in extra small, small, medium, large, extra large (XL) and 2XL. It is still best to try on the motorcycle helmet when buying. Outwardly pull to widen the chin strap and place the helmet over the head. It should have comfortable, snug fit and its tightness should not allow you to lodge a thumb between the helmet and your forehead.

Adjust and fasten the chin strap but make sure that this will not restrict your neck movements. Shake your head to ensure that the helmet doesn’t move unnecessarily or fall off. In addition, press down on the helmet to check on the overall comfort and snug fit onto your head.Your field of vision, front and both sides, must not be obstructed. For riders who don corrective eyewear, make certain that the helmet can comfortably accommodate your pair of eyeglasses.

If your have long hair, and wish to “wear” it inside the helmet while riding, do so while trying on the helmet to properly accommodate the bulk.

Approval Sticker

The motorcycle helmet must be approved or have a sticker issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT) of the United States of America (U.S.A.) or the Snell Memorial Foundation. A DOT or Snell sticker signifies that the helmet meets U.S. or international safety standards

Generally, there are five principal types of motorcycle helmets;
  • full face helmets
  • modular helmets
  • half helmets
  • open face helmets
  • motor-cross helmets

Ideally, it is recommended to replace the motorcycle helmet every three years or so even if it has not suffered any impact or appears to be in top condition.
